Like other area cities, Plymouth Police have noticed a recent uptick in mail theft. The department reminds residents to practice safety with mail and package deliveries sent to or from their homes.

Follow and share these tips to help protect yourself and others against mail and package theft:

• Check your mailbox daily and promptly collect your packages. If needed, ask a trusted neighbor to bring your mail or packages inside.
• When sending a check by mail, drop it in a U.S. Postal Service blue collection box or inside a post office, and always avoid sending cash. Thieves are known to target outgoing mail that appears to contain money.
• While traveling, place a mail hold at your local post office, or ask a trusted neighbor or family member to secure your mail and packages on your behalf.
• Customize your delivery by providing delivery instructions online. Request that delivery carriers leave packages in less conspicuous spots, such as a side door or within a fenced area.
• When mailing something important or of value, use registered mail. Registered mail tracks every movement from the time you drop it off until it’s in the hands of the recipient, and requires signature confirmation upon delivery.
