Location, Location, Location

Many major highways run through or are close to Plymouth, making it readily accessible to all within the metropolitan area. Interstate 494 runs through Plymouth as does Hwy. 55. Hwy. 169 is on the city’s eastern border and I-394 is within four miles from the center of Plymouth.

Natural Amenities

Plymouth residents also enjoy beautiful natural amenities, including more than a half a dozen sizable water bodies. Medicine Lake, the second largest lake in Hennepin County, is located in Plymouth. It is a magnet for anglers and boaters. Plymouth voters have gone to the polls twice to authorize the City of Plymouth to issue bonds to buy open space for preservation and parks.

Jobs

In addition to being a popular place to live, Plymouth is also the choice for many businesses. The city is home to a thriving commercial-industrial base, consisting of approximately 54,000 jobs. Plymouth has Minnesota's fourth largest economy, as measured in gross business sales by the Minnesota Department of Revenue. Only Minneapolis, St. Paul and Bloomington show more gross business sales. 

Population

While Plymouth’s growth is slowing, the community continues to see population increases. Results from the 2020 Census put Plymouth's population at 81,026. The most recent estimate from the Metropolitan Council puts Plymouth's population at 80,546 as of April 1, 2022, making Plymouth the state's seventh largest city.

Plymouth operates under the council-manager form of government. The city council sets policy and overall direction for the city. The city council appoints a city manager to administer the policy and handle day-to-day operations. The city charter, which Plymouth voters adopted in 1993, details city government structure and procedures.

Several commissions, committees and boards – comprised of residents appointed by the city council – study and advise the city council on a variety of issues. The city council makes appointments to commissions, committees and boards each year.

Three Rivers Park District, a regional public parks and trails system, has two parks located in Plymouth.

Clifton E. French Regional Park

Clifton E. French Regional Park is along the north shore of Medicine Lake. It includes a swimming beach, fishing pier, lighted trails, play area and more.

Eagle Lake Regional Park

The 230-acre Eagle Lake Regional Park is located on the border of Plymouth and Maple Grove. It features diverse recreational opportunities, including biking, hiking, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. The park is also home to the popular Eagle Lake Youth Golf Center.

Schools are important to our community’s quality of life. Plymouth residents are served by four highly regarded public school districts.

The majority of the city (western and southern areas) is served by Wayzata Public Schools. All of the schools the Wayzata school district, with one exception, are located in Plymouth. Robbinsdale school district serves the east-central area of Plymouth. The Osseo school district includes the northeast area and Hopkins includes the southeast corner of Plymouth.
