In recognition of National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, Plymouth residents may pick up free medicine disposal bags 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 24, at the Plymouth Public Safety Building, 3400 Plymouth Blvd.
Up to two free drug disposal bags are available per household, while supplies last, which allow for safe disposal of small amounts of unwanted/unused medications in the trash. No medication will be collected at this event.
The bags contain activated carbon, which neutralizes the medication and prevents it from contaminating the groundwater. Once deactivated, residents can put the omni-degradable bag in the trash.
Properly disposing of unused or unwanted medicine is vital to prevent abuse or poisoning, and protect the environment.
National Prescription Drug Take Back day is promoted by the Drug Enforcement Administration to help prevent drug addiction and overdose.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 81,000 drug overdose deaths occurred in the United States from May 2019-2020 – the highest number of overdose deaths recorded in a 12-month period.
