Volunteer to Adopt a Dog Waste Station
Help keep city parks and trails clean. This volunteer position is available through Plymouth Parks & Forestry.

Time Commitment:

• As needed, every-other-week or monthly, year-round.

Activities/Duties:

• Monitor and stock dog waste stations with dog waste bags. Bags are available at the Maintenance Facility, 14900 23rd Ave. N.
• Be an additional pair of eyes at the park – report any damage, repair needs, potential dangers or large items, such as downed tree limbs at plymouthmn.gov/myPlymouth or by using the myPlymouth app, which is available from the Google Play and Apple App stores.
• Turn in a completed time sheet at the end of the season or enter hours online through the City’s website. Instructions will be provided.

Qualifications & Desired Skills:

• Enjoy being outdoors.
• Desire to keep city parks and trails clean and safe.
• Willing to follow through on a commitment.
• Dependable and responsible.

Volunteer to Adopt a Fire Hydrant

The Plymouth Fire Department encourages residents to help firefighters by clearing snow and ice from around fire hydrants through the Adopt a Hydrant program.

Every second counts in a house fire, and digging out a hydrant to access water takes critical time from firefighters. Help keep fire hydrants clear so firefighters and fire equipment can gain quick access in an emergency.

Time Commitment:

• As needed during snowy months.

Activities/Duties:

• Remove significant snow and ice in a 3-foot radius around the fire hydrant within 24 hours of a snow event.
• Register the hydrant to identify location and record volunteer time commitment. 
• Report hydrant damage at plymouthmn.gov/myplymouth.

Qualifications:

• Desire to assist the Plymouth Fire Department and emergency response personnel.
• Willing to follow through on a commitment.
• Dependable and responsible.

Volunteer to Adopt a Garden

Help keep gardens and landscaped areas in city parks looking great. This volunteer position is available through Plymouth Parks & Forestry.

Time Commitment:

• Once every 1-2 weeks, spring through fall (warmer weather months).
• One-time only for a person or group who wants to volunteer but cannot commit to entire summer.

Activities/Duties:

• Remove dead plant material once the snow has melted. Small amounts of material can be taken home or placed in nearby woods to decompose. Significant amounts of material can be reported through the myPlymouth app for pick up by staff.
• Divide and move perennials if overgrown.
• Weed garden bed and deadhead flowers regularly.
• Spread mulch provided by staff, if necessary.
• Lightly prune shrubs to promote better growing habit, if necessary.
• Be an additional pair of eyes – report any damage, repair needs, potential dangers or large items, such as downed tree limbs at plymouthmn.gov/myPlymouth or by using the myPlymouth app, which is available from the Google Play and Apple App stores.
• Turn in a completed time sheet at the end of the season or enter hours online through the city’s website. Instructions will be provided.

Volunteer to Adopt a Park

• Pick up litter at the park or trail – free bags are available at the Maintenance Facility, 14900 23rd Ave. N.
• Put litter in trash receptacles, or, if receptacle is full, please place trash bags next to it. City crews make routine visits to all parks to remove trash.
• Keep sign planters weeded.
• Keep play structure area weeded.
• Be an additional pair of eyes at the park – report any damage, repair needs, potential dangers or large items, such as downed tree limbs at plymouthmn.gov/myPlymouth or by using the myPlymouth app, which is available from the Google Play and Apple App stores.
• Turn in a completed time sheet at the end of the season or enter hours online through the city’s website. Instructions will be provided.

Volunteer to Adopt a Storm Drain
Help keep storm drains clear of leaves, yard waste, salt, sand and trash to prevent storm water pollution. This volunteer position is available through the Plymouth Public Works Department.

Time Commitment:

• As needed during spring and fall – year-round if possible.

Activities/Duties:

• Remove leaves, twigs, yard waste, salt, sand and trash from storm drain grates and dispose appropriately.
• Keep storm drain free of ice and snow, if possible.
• Register your storm drain with the Adopt a Spot program so your storm drain and volunteer commitment can be recorded.
• Report any concerns as needed at plymouthmn.gov/myPlymouth or by using the myPlymouth app, which is available from the Google Play and Apple App stores.

Qualifications:

• Desire to keep Plymouth’s watersheds free of storm water pollution.
• Willing to follow through on a commitment.
• Dependable and responsible.
• You can take your responsibilities a step further and check out a storm drain marking kit to apply a sticker educating others about storm drain pollution.

Note: This is an unsupervised position but can be a great introduction for children to begin volunteering and learning about giving back to their communities.

Storm Drain Marking Kits
If you're seeking an additional way to help protect water quality in Plymouth, consider checking out (borrowing) a storm drain marking kit from the City of Plymouth. The kits contain a curb sticker with the message "No dumping –drains to lake" to help educate others about storm drains and their relationship to water quality.

To borrow a kit, call Water Resources Supervisor Ben Scharenbroich at 763-509-5527 or email bscharenbroich@plymouthmn.gov. Kits can be picked up at Plymouth City Hall, 3400 Plymouth Blvd.

Volunteer to Adopt a Street (Sponsor)
Help keep city streets clear of litter so pollutants don’t enter the storm water system. This volunteer position is available through the Plymouth Public Works Department.

Time Commitment:

• At least three times per year for a two-year period.

Activities/Duties:

• Complete an application and sign a contract agreeing to the time commitment.
• Contact the Plymouth Maintenance Facility office at 763-509-5950 or publicworks@plymouthmn.gov at least five days prior to your scheduled cleanup day to arrange to pick up your supplies of bags, time sheet and safety vests. The Maintenance Facility is located at 14900 23rd Ave. N.
• Pick up litter along both sides of the adopted street but not in the roadway.
• Clean the tops of storm drains.
• Report graffiti and large items at plymouthmn.gov/myPlymouth or by using the myPlymouth app, which is available from the Google Play and Apple App stores.
• Report suspicious items such as closed boxes, bags and suspect activity to Plymouth Police by calling 911.
• Contact Public Works after each cleanup so city staff can collect the bags of litter.
• Return safety vests and the group volunteer time sheet to Public Works.

Safety Concerns:

• The sponsor assumes responsibility for all personal protective equipment except safety vests. Examples include: gloves, insect repellent, proper weather gear, closed toe shoes, hats, sunblock, etc.
• Be cautious of hazardous materials that pose unreasonable risk of health, safety or property when transported. Do not walk or drive into spilled materials nor move or touch anything that is unmarked, unlabeled or appears suspicious. Call 911 to report hazardous materials.
• Do not park vehicles on the side of the street which may block traffic and site lines.
• Conduct clean ups during daylight hours for greater visibility.

Sponsorship Recognition:

• The City of Plymouth will install a sign printed with your organization’s name in a safe location along your adopted road.
