Filing Period

Candidate Requirements

1. Candidate must be an eligible voter.
2. Candidate is, or will be on assuming the office, 21 years of age or older.
3. Maintained residence in the district from which the candidate seeks election for 30 days before the general election. Please visit the poll finder to determine what ward you reside in.

Filing Documents 

• The following forms and fee are required to be filed with the City Clerk when filing for office:
  • Affidavit of Candidacy (PDF)
  • Code of Ethics Disclosure Form (PDF)
  • Statement of Economic Interest (PDF) (due within 14 days of signing Affidavit of Candidacy)
  • $5 filling fee
• Minnesota Secretary Of State - Campaign Filing Packet provides additional Campaign Filing forms, handouts, and website resources.

City Council candidates must complete Campaign Financial Reporting Forms (PDF)

• The initial report is due within 14 days after receiving contributions or making disbursements of more than $750.
• Subsequent reports are due:
  • 10 days before the primary or special primary (even if candidate is not on primary ballots)
  • 10 days before the general election or special election
  • 30 days after the general election or special election
  • By Jan. 31 of each year until a final report is filed
• A final report is due when all assets are settled and all assets are disposed of in excess of $100.
