The Plymouth Fire Department invites families to take a neighborhood fire hydrant under their wing to make sure that it is well taken care of this winter. Adopt-a-Hydrant sponsors pledge to keep their hydrant free of snow and ice, and to shovel a three-foot radius around it throughout the winter.

By joining the Adopt a Fire Hydrant program, residents will be eligible to win a free dinner at a Plymouth restaurant. In addition, they’ll be improving the safety of their neighborhood.

“Residents who participate in the program provide a valuable service to the community,” said Fire Chief Richard Kline. “By keeping fire hydrants cleared, firefighters will have immediate access to them, if needed,” said Kline.

Last year, 561 families participated in the campaign. Between January and March firefighters made random visits to the homes of Adopt a Hydrant families to award them with restaurant prizes.

Registration and “The Prize Patrol”
Families who have adopted a hydrant in previous years are automatically enrolled for this winter. Residents who want to enroll in the program simply complete an Adopt-a-Hydrant application and return it to the Fire Department. Applications can be downloaded from the city’s website or picked up at the Fire Department’s administrative office, 3400 Plymouth Blvd. The office is located in the Public Safety Building. Applications can be submitted by mail, fax at 763-509-5142 or in person. 

Starting in January, firefighters will make random visits to adopted hydrants each week. They’ll check to see that the hydrants are clear of snow and ice. If the hydrants pass the safety check, firefighters will award the sponsoring families with gift certificates to Plymouth restaurants.
