Large Group of Volunteers to Plant a ‘Forest’ to Celebrate Arbor Day

Post Date:05/15/2013
More than 150 volunteers have signed up to help plant a “forest” – of 1,000 trees – on the Northwest Greenway in Plymouth, near 57th Avenue and Dunkirk Lane. The planting, held in celebration of Arbor Day and the 20th anniversary of the city’s volunteer program, will begin at 9 a.m. and end at noon Wednesday, May 22.

During the event, “An Arbor Day Forest for the Greenway,” volunteers will reshape premade holes to fit tree and shrub roots.

“We have home-schooled kids, teeny-tinies, seniors, Master Gardeners, a lot of corporate volunteers and the regular gang who have signed up to help us plant trees,” said Plymouth Volunteer Coordinator Jackie Maas. “It’s going to be a great turnout – and a lot of fun.”

Smokey Bear and Woodsy Owl will also make an appearance at 10 a.m. By day, the duo is a husband-and-wife team who also volunteer at the City of Plymouth.

City Forester Paul Buck will care for the saplings until they have taken root. Sixteen tree varieties will be planted, including sugar maple, quaking aspen, American plum and eastern red cedar.
