Children in Poland Flock to Donated Playground

Post Date:07/11/2011
Playground to PolandPlaygrounds abound in Plymouth, but are scarce in many parts of the world. Thanks to the non-profit Kids Around the World program, the St. Louis Park and Plymouth Rotary clubs and the City of Plymouth, the children of Glogow, Poland now have a playground.

When the playground at Plymouth’s Shiloh Park was replaced last summer, the existing equipment was refurbished by Kids Around the World and sent to Glogow. It is the first playground to be installed in that city since the fall of communism in 1990. More than 3,000 children flocked to play on it in the first three days after the playground was installed.

The City of Plymouth is working with Kids Around the World again this summer. The city donated the playground from South Shore Park, which was due for replacement. The equipment will likely go to Arusha, Tanzaqnia, an area in Africa where there are no playgrounds, according to Park Maintenance Supervisor Dan Heitke.

Due to liability reasons, it is both city and industry policy that old playground equipment cannot be sold or given to cities for reuse in the U.S.
