police carIf you’ve ever wondered how real life police work compares to what you see on television, you can find out at the Public Safety Citizens Academy. The academy is a free, 12 week course that will give you a behind the scenes look at the Plymouth Police Department.

Classes are from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Thursdays starting Sept. 8. The academy is open to adults who live or work in Plymouth. Applications to the academy will be accepted through Aug. 8.

Some of the areas covered by the academy include:

  • Patrol Operations
  • Police Tactics
  • Legal Issues
  • Hennepin County Sheriff’s Communication Center
  • How Investigations are Conducted
  • Decision Shooting Scenarios
  • The Operations of the Fire Service Division

Community Relations Officer Jim Long, who is coordinating the academy, said, “The purpose of the academy is to provide participants an opportunity to learn more about the public safety services available in Plymouth and foster an on-going partnership with the department and academy participants. A well informed citizenry is a great asset to the Plymouth Police Department.”

To apply for the academy, call Jim Long at 763-509-5135, and ask to have an application mailed to you. The Plymouth Police Department will run a criminal history check on all applicants.
