The Plymouth Fire Department is looking to reach seniors who are homebound, have limited mobility, are ill, or family members caring for aging family member who may need assistance caring for their smoke or carbon monoxide detectors. Firefighters would like to make complimentary visits to their homes to test, clean, and change the batteries in smoke detectors. While supplies last, the department will provide new batteries free of charge to these residents.
The Fire Department is focusing on seniors with special needs because adults age 65 and older are twice as likely to die in a fire as any other age group, and the death rate for those 85 years and older is four times the national average. Firefighters are also targeting mobility restricted residents because they, too, are at high risk in a fire emergency.
