Fire Department Offers Reminders, At-Home Visits for National Fire Prevention Week

Post Date:09/30/2014

The Plymouth Fire Department offers reminders, tips and at-home visits for residents in recognition of National Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 5-11.

Reminders, At-Home Visits
In recognition of National Fire Prevention Week, the Plymouth Fire Department reminds residents to test their smoke and carbon monoxide alarms monthly and replace the batteries once a year. For those who are in need of help changing the batteries, testing the alarms or developing a home fire escape plan, the department is offering free at-home visits.

“We specifically want to service alarms that are inaccessible, such as lofts or vaulted ceilings. Residents just need to provide a 9-volt battery for each alarm that they have,” said Plymouth Fire Chief Richard C. Kline. “During the at-home visits, we’ll also address fire and injury risks at each residence.” Firefighters strive to include the entire family in the development of home escape plans and will work to teach children what to do in the event of a fire.

At-home visits aren’t limited to Fire Prevention Week. The Plymouth Fire Department offers the service year-round as part of its Smokebusters Program – and particularly encourages seniors and those who may have difficulty climbing a ladder to take advantage of the opportunity.

Safety Tips
In addition, the Plymouth Fire Department offers the following safety tips:

  • Do not leave cooking or burning candles unattended
  • Properly dispose of ashes and cigarettes – in a sand-filled metal container with a metal lid
  • Clean the lint screen in the dryer after each use
  • Develop and practice a fire escape plan
  • Keep matches and lighters out of the reach of children
  • Equip all bed stands with working flashlights
  • Have furnaces, fireplaces and fuel-burning appliances professionally inspected each year
