Protect Water Quality by Adopting a Storm Drain

Post Date:10/04/2016 5:07 p.m.

Volunteer to adopt a storm drain in PlymouthAs fall approaches, residents are encouraged to adopt a neighborhood storm drain to ensure that it is kept free of sticks, leaves and debris – it’s a simple way to help protect water quality in Plymouth.

It’s easy to do – residents just need a rake or broom and some gloves. Sticks and leaves can be deposited at the Plymouth Yard Waste Site, while litter can be trashed or recycled.

By removing foreign materials from storm drains, residents help to protect these water resources from the damaging effects of nutrients and other pollutants.

To adopt a storm drain, call Volunteer Coordinator Jackie Maas at 763-509-5230 or email jmaas@plymouthmn.gov.

Mark the Curb to Send a Water Quality Message
The City of Plymouth loans kits to residents to help mark the storm drains in their neighborhoods. The message – "no dumping, drains to lake" – is one that the city uses to educate residents about storm drains and their relationship to water quality.

Residents are encouraged to borrow the kits and mark their neighborhood storm drains to remind passersby that storm water and debris drains straight into the lakes, rivers and wetlands untreated, which can pollute the water and boost the growth of algae.

To borrow a kit, call 763-509-5527. Kits can be picked up at City Hall, 3400 Plymouth Blvd.
