This year, Plymouth will mark a major milestone in the construction of the Northwest Greenway – a more than 350-acre reserve of land with a looping paved trail for walkers and bikers – with a ribbon cutting and tree planting.

Set for 12:30 p.m. Sunday, June 4, the ribbon cutting will celebrate the opening of a pedestrian bridge over Vicksburg Lane and majority completion of the east-west portion of the trail.

The event will be held at the bridge over Vicksburg Lane, located south of County Road 47 and north of Schmidt Lake Road.

Tree Planting
The Northwest Greenway preserves a significant amount of Plymouth’s natural space and offers residents another way to enjoy the outdoors. Taking preservation further, the city is planting a forest for the future along the Greenway trail – and help is needed to make it reality.

From 8 a.m. to noon the morning of the June 4 ribbon cutting ceremony, volunteers will take up shovels and help plant 1,500 trees along the Greenway. Volunteers are needed to plant a variety of trees – families and groups are welcome. Background
The Northwest Greenway project has been in the works since 2000 as the city has steadily acquired property for preservation. With the majority of land purchased, construction is complete on roughly 4 miles of trail and boardwalk, with about 2 to 3 miles to go.

The project features trailheads, rest stops and amenities, including bicycle fix-it stations, benches, drinking fountains, restrooms and more. The Greenway connects to regional and local trails and is expected to reach substantial completion by the end of 2020.
