To help residents stay safe during Halloween festivities, the Plymouth Public Safety Department offers the following safety tips for trick-or-treaters, pedestrians and motorists:
Costume Safety
- Wear light-colored clothing. Add reflective tape or reflectors to dark-colored costumes.
- Make props, such as magic wands and swords, out of cardboard or foam rather than metal or wood.
- Choose costumes that are flame retardant and avoid long, hanging fabric that could catch on fire.
Trick-or-Treat Safety
- Be cautious with candy – accept and give only individually wrapped or packaged candy.
- Adults should inspect all candy and treats prior to consumption.
- Supervise young trick-or-treaters. Send older children out in groups.
- Carry a flashlight when it starts to get dark.
- Children should trick-or-treat in their own neighborhood and only visit homes of people they know.
Pedestrian Safety Reminders
- Walk on the sidewalk while trick-or-treating.
- Look both ways before crossing a street.
- Try to finish trick-or-treating before it gets dark.
- Never run into the street or between parked cars.
Motorist Safety Tips
- Slow down in residential neighborhoods and obey all traffic signs and signals.
- Obey the crosswalk law and stop for pedestrians at corners.
- Watch for pedestrians walking in or near the street.
- Be alert for children who may dart into the street.
