People trick-or-treating

To help residents stay safe during Halloween festivities, the Plymouth Public Safety Department offers the following safety tips for trick-or-treaters, pedestrians and motorists:

 Costume Safety

  • Wear light-colored clothing. Add reflective tape or reflectors to dark-colored costumes.
  • Make props, such as magic wands and swords, out of cardboard or foam rather than metal or wood.
  • Choose costumes that are flame retardant and avoid long, hanging fabric that could catch on fire.

Trick-or-Treat Safety

  • Be cautious with candy – accept and give only individually wrapped or packaged candy.
  • Adults should inspect all candy and treats prior to consumption.
  • Supervise young trick-or-treaters. Send older children out in groups.
  • Carry a flashlight when it starts to get dark.
  • Children should trick-or-treat in their own neighborhood and only visit homes of people they know.

Pedestrian Safety Reminders

  • Walk on the sidewalk while trick-or-treating.
  • Look both ways before crossing a street.
  • Try to finish trick-or-treating before it gets dark.
  • Never run into the street or between parked cars.

Motorist Safety Tips

  • Slow down in residential neighborhoods and obey all traffic signs and signals.
  • Obey the crosswalk law and stop for pedestrians at corners.
  • Watch for pedestrians walking in or near the street.
  • Be alert for children who may dart into the street.
