The Plymouth Fire Department is hiring part-time/on-call firefighters – and interested community members are encouraged to apply. The application window for this flexible, vital and fulfilling position is set to open Monday, May 13 and applications are due Sunday, June 30.
Part-time/on-call firefighters come from all walks of life, with varying backgrounds – teachers, mechanics, financial advisors, veterans and more. The position is designed to be flexible to accommodate parents with children and those working full-time jobs.
Recruitment Meetings: Attendance is Vital
Firefighter recruitment meetings are set for 6:30 p.m. the following Thursdays at Plymouth Fire Station 2, 12000 Old Rockford Road.
Prospective applicants are strongly encouraged to attend one of the meetings – and bring their spouse or significant other – to learn what to expect on the job, speak with firefighters and ask questions.
About the Job
In addition to responding to medical and fire calls, Plymouth firefighters provide public education in schools, homes, businesses and community organizations. They serve others, learn lifelong skills and build friendships. “Becoming a firefighter may sound daunting, but people are often surprised to find that it isn’t,” said Fire Battalion Chief Steve Baker. “We set you up for success by sending you to school, paying you to train and teaching you the skills you need to be a firefighter.”
Part-time/on-call firefighters earn an hourly wage for all on-duty activities, including training. They are partially vested for a pension after five years of service, and can defer wages to a qualified retirement plan. Fitness facilities are also available. Candidates must be at least 18 years old and have a high school diploma or equivalent, reside within an 8-minute travel time to a Plymouth fire station and possess a valid Minnesota driver’s license. “While the time commitment is higher the first year, this position provides a lot of flexibility for life outside of the fire station,” said Baker. “It’s a rewarding experience and offers great benefits and comradery.”
